Repairing Your Pond Fountain

One of the more important decisions when purchasing a pond fountain is the availability of a repair center and the ease of maintenance of the unit you have purchased.  While this is of lesser importance if the unit a lower cost, throwaway style unit, the higher end pond fountains usually provide features that make them more maintenance friendly.  Units 700 dollars or less are often not considered for major repairs because by the time you purchase parts and pay for the labor and shipping costs, you will have normally spent over half the price of the units original cost.

The more expensive fountains, especially those that are several thousand dollars or more are usually worth rebuilding.  One of the most common modes of failure is an issue with the submersible motor.  This can be due to a a number of reasons, but it often involves failed bearings and water in the motor bearings and windings.  This type of work can normally be handle by a motor repair shop.  Many motor repair shops are very familiar with submersible pump repairs and should be able to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate for the work.  Please be aware thought that many shops will charge you a fee just to diagnose the problem, as this will take up to a few hours to determine, so discuss with your repair shop your concerns and find out if their are tear down charges.

Other issues including stopped up nozzles, clogged filters, clogged impellers or propellers, and broken impellers can be handle by the owner or can be repaired by a local machine shop or pump repair shop.  Please remember to follow all the manufacturers recommended procedures and do not perform any work until the unit is completely disconnected from its electrical source.  Most manufactures not only have a thorough maintenance manual, many will have a trouble shooting section that may help you diagnose your pond fountains problem.  And some of the pond fountain manufactures have the ability to test your pump before it is shipped back to you to ensure that your fountain is working properly.
